Oh the Trouble Those Darn Birds Put Us Through

Posted by john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 14 April 2009 in Animal & Insect.

Silly Tuesday. Without the squirrel feeders the birds would eat every last bit of the squirrel food.

Thank you to all of you who commented on my Saturday post appearing in the Spotlight. It was quite unexpected. Also thank you to those who gave reflective comment on my Faux HDR experiment. I doubt that I will move in the direction of strong HDR; however, I find a more subtle HDR to be quite appealing. When I do real HDR, my goal is to use it for its original purpose, namely, high dynamic range (lighting conditions beyond the capabilities of my camera with a single capture). My desire is for the end result to look natural and not at all like an HDR image.

So funny...I don't think I've ever seen a squirrels feet quite like this before. Most of the time they seem to be hanging upside down to get into our bird feeders. I don't mind...they're so much fun to watch.

hehehe Looks like the squirrels have a bit of trouble with the feeders too

14 Apr 2009 6:04am

Craig from Vacaville, California, United States

Caught in the act! A fine shot! I'm with you about the use of HDR. That is how I enjoy using it. But, at the same time I can appreciate the fine art of those that use it differently than me.

14 Apr 2009 6:21am

@Craig: Agreed on the way others use it.

Linerberry from Sumner, Christchurch, New Zealand

Your photo put me really guess and look and again guess and look!!! Until I read your words and
got a good laugh, thank you!

And what you are saying about HDR, it sounds good. I think, HDR program`s purpose is just it, make a photo
good without showing HDR.

Great timing Jack, squirrels are the funniest of creatures if you have the time to watch them, we used to have a few in our back garden in the UK, they were very clever and can get to the food no matter what obsitcle is in their way. Brilliant and funny shot.

This is too funny! I don't think there is any such thing as squirrel proof - do you? Great capture!

14 Apr 2009 4:01pm

@Photosanity: It is a squirrel feeder, designed for the squirrels and to keep out the birds.

Don from spokane, United States

What a fine action shot. I have squirrels who get my peanuts every day and they are lots of fun to watch.
Crows come and "steal" a few nuts, but seem to fear the squirrels and avoid confrontations! :-)

Jack this is so funny (even if I don't care for squirrels) ... he almost appears to be ready to topple backwards. Fun Tuesday indeed

I didn't realized it was his tail first :) I don't know squirrel feeder and it is the first time for me to see a squirrel in action.

LMAO!! Nicely done, Jack!

15 Apr 2009 3:34am

Barbara from Florida, United States

This is quite funny, Jack. It took me a moment to realize the entire front portion of his body is inside. His legs and feet look comical.
I am puzzled though because here the problem is the other way around, the squirrels eat all of the birds food.
I've hidden the peanuts in a snapped lid container in the garage only to catch the thieves sneak in and get the lid off.
Now I keep the peanuts in my trunk for when I'm out taking photos.

Cute shot..balance of things i guess..by the way never heard of silly thursday...

15 Apr 2009 4:03am

@marcel lemieux/star_cosmos_bleu: A couple of months or so ago, a group within aminus3 thought that at least one day a week we should be light hearted and funny, and yes, silly. So Silly Tuesday got started. Liners (Caroline) (http://linerberry.aminus3.com/) from New Zealand has been the ring leader. Everyone is invited to join. All you need to do is each Tuesday make your post something that is silly or funny. Because it can be difficult to come up with something at the last minute, some people have created a Silly Tuesday folder where they put things in as they pop up; then they have a backlog of stuff. I think that photographic screwups also qualify. We would love to have you participate. All you need to do is post something appropriate on Tuesdays.

Sarah Schneider Photography from Lancaster, United States

Mariana from waterloo, Canada

This is an awesome catch ! you came so close to it ! Looks funny :))

17 Apr 2009 10:19pm

@Mariana: This is Silly Tuesday, a relatively new tradition for many of us on aminus3. You need to jump on board. All you need to do is post something silly or funny or absurd each Tuesday. If you have any questions about it, check in with Liners (aka, Caroline Cowley, linerberry [AT] yahoo [DOT] co.uk).

Betsy Barron from Chester Springs, PA, United States

hysterical! boy, we've all had these little fellas stealing the bird seed!

20 Apr 2009 2:16pm

@Betsy Barron: Actually this is a squirrel feeder that the birds can't get into. The birds here steal all of the squirrel food. With different feeders for each critter, things work out just fine.

Dan Creighton from Pottstown, United States

I feel like a voyeur looking at this image. It makes me chuckle.
