The First Sign of Spring

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 20 February 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

Where I live, the blooming of crocuses is the first sign of Spring. This was taken in our front yard February 15, 2009.

A personal note. Diane Schuller in her comment yesterday used the word "soulful." Photography may be the most spiritual thing that I do. I feel that photography connects the deepest part of me with the deepest part of the Universe. It is a profoundly holy venture. I am way more invested in that experience of the Holy than with all of the rest, including the quality of my work. This gets at why I tend to feel embarrassed in putting photographs on the Internet. When the photograph seems to go to a different level, I am well aware that there is something else at work in me. Also, my photographs are so personal; and being a strong introvert, they are really quite private.

If one had taken what is necessary to cover one's needs and had left the rest to those who are in need, no one would be rich, no one would be poor, no one would be in need.

Magnificent capture. The warmth of the color can warm the spirit.
Expression through images can be more powerful than words.

20 Feb 2009 2:18pm

@Barbara: Agreed, Barbara. Often I don't have the words to express what I feel; only poetry will do, and I am not a poet. A photograph sometimes comes much closer to the reality. On aminus3, through the sharing of photographs, I often feel not simply a connection, but a level of intimacy.

Astonishingly vibrant and beautiful, and your words so eloquently written which will strike a chord with many of us I believe. It's very hard posting images, as we lay ourselves open and bare, and what means so much to us might well mean so little to others. Photographs are incredibly personal things, and individual preferences play such a part in wether we like or dislike them.

But it's such a joyful experience, I believe, when someone connects with an image, or sees in it exactly what we see, or indeed, something completely different. That to me, helps compensate for the fear of laying ourselves open, and makes it all so enjoyable and creative.

A fabulous photograph and a wonderful post, Jack

20 Feb 2009 2:37pm

@EYES WIDE SHUT: Thank you, Paul. You are not only a superb photographer; you have a gifted eloquence with words. And you can marry your photographs with your words. Both your photographs and your words touch our hearts!
