WHICH METERING SYSTEM? - For Nikon users, Matrix is best for most situations. However, Nikon recommends that if you are using a filter that has an exposure factor of one stop or more (Note: this includes a polarizer), you should use Center-weighted. Strongly backlit subjects, especially on bright snow or sand, benefit from Center-weighted. If you really understand exposure, Spot metering sometimes is needed.

I am devouring that yellow reflected in the gorgeous turquoise water.
Again, a beautiful guality of light throughout.

14 Nov 2009 7:15am

@Dulcie: Many thanks.

Mathilde Collot from Fontainebleau, France

And when I do not have time to come see you when I come back again, it's always the same glare as forgetting the beauty of your images! It's really magic!

14 Nov 2009 7:28am

@Mathilde Collot: Despite the fact that I began doing photography in 1950, I feel that I have grown more as a photographer in my almost one year on Am3 than the previous 58. The main growth related to Am3 has come from seeing a broad range of photographs, and especially from the superb photographs (although I must say that the mediocre photographs have had a teaching value). Your photographs have been an ongoing source of inspiration.

fabrizio from rome, Italy

14 Nov 2009 10:26am

Betty from Phillipsburg, United States

That's one of the topics Patrick Zephyr taught at length... which meter system to use for different situations. It was very helpful. He suggested center weighted also, then showed us photographs to decide which method to use. We were not always right, LOL. A really beautiful river and reflections.

14 Nov 2009 10:57am

@Betty: With each advance in technology, the Matrix metering becomes better; sometimes significantly better. The Matrix metering on my D700 is extraordinary.

daniela scharnowski from Berlin, Germany

ah, these wonderful colours! The contrast between the yellow trees and the turqouise river is classic and makes this crisp.

Simply a magical landscape. A place you can just forget the whole world. Where you can obviously, naturally, feel alive.

14 Nov 2009 4:30pm

@zOOm: It's like being in a place of worship all of the time. When it comes to feeling alive, I find that when I am shooting, no matter where or what I am shooting, I feel alive.

Adela Fonts Artús from Barcelona, Spain

Wonderful and idyllic shot. Nice work!

14 Nov 2009 4:34pm

don from spokane, United States

This is a very attractive landscape. You've caught the fall colors very well. The curve in the river and the wonderful warm light give it a strong impact.

14 Nov 2009 4:46pm

Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, Canada

Good old hand held meters are still crucial pieces of equipment.
What absolutely gorgeous colours and I like the curving lines pulling us in.

14 Nov 2009 4:56pm

Macrobaby from Vancouver, Canada

The wonderful yellow really pops from the soft mutted shades of the river and it's bank. Perfect composition to lead us through the photograph. The eye travels along with the curves taking it all in.

14 Nov 2009 5:01pm

@Macrobaby: Thank you.

Pavan Kaul from Mumbai, India

Awesome Jack...the light, colors and composition are so wonderful!!!

14 Nov 2009 5:09pm

k@ from Paris, France

Love the yellow dancing with green here, really beautiful* and this metering system is really to be tested carefully, I'm testing the spot one lately and sometimes as you mention, it gives very interesting result for sure*

14 Nov 2009 5:28pm

@k@: Spot metering requires more knowledge of exposure than do the other two. Unless I have a polarizer on or have strong backlighting, I almost always start with Matrix. Then, if I need to, I switch. I marvel at some photographer's mastery of exposure.

Yvon from Orleans, France

Wonderful landscape

Terrific colours and light Jack.

14 Nov 2009 7:08pm

k@ from Paris, France

I guess for landscapes, Matrix is the best for sure. For my street shots, Center-Weighted is much better so I'm always on it (more contrasts you get on streets scenes). Love that you share you knowledge, really appreciated, thank you, Jack.

14 Nov 2009 7:33pm

@k@: Most of my technical knowledge comes from outside resources. The metering suggestions come from Thom Hogan, one of my favorite resources.

Loner from Wörgl, Austria
