December Drops

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 14 December 2009 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

This shot was taken about 5 feet from yesterday's. These drops don't have the same jazzy reflections as did the ones on December 3 with the leaves being reflected. However, I like the way the drop on the right seems to be hanging on for dear life; we've all been there!
*************************************************************

GRAIN (noise??) - A word about grain, which sometimes people think is noise. With both yesterday's and today's shots, no matter how much I cropped them down, they didn't have a speck of noise. (I double checked this.) However, with both shots, I wanted some grain. This was created in post-processing. Being a photographer who goes back to 1950, often a certain amount of grain is like putting on a pair of old slippers.

MARIANA from Waterloo, Canada

December drops, or November drops , they are always great on your shots . I still remember those drops with red leaves reflected in them ...Great capture, Jack !

14 Dec 2009 5:09am

@MARIANA: Thanks, Mariana. The shot with leaves was a rare gift. It was only the drop on the right that caused me to post this one.

Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, Canada

They make very cool lenses. Lovely shot.

14 Dec 2009 5:20am

@Michael Rawluk: Thanks, Michael. When I take pictures of drops, I always wonder what I will see reflected.

Oh these berries and their reflective drops are sublime. I love this kind of macro !!!
The grain enhances the image, no question about that. Love it !!

14 Dec 2009 6:50am

@Dulcie: Thanks, Dulcie. I often take larger landscapes, but it is intimacy that grabs me.

Japanalia from Yokohama, Japan

Exquisite capture of the tears of December!

14 Dec 2009 7:22am

@Japanalia: Thank you. I love your metaphor.

Toni from Eastern Washington, United States

We're just the opposite, Jack - you add grain and I take it away! Love this capture and those water drops are gorgeous.

14 Dec 2009 7:26am

@Toni: Thanks, Toni. I add grain for some shots. And remove noise from other shots. With the D700, I just don't get noise. With my D300, I start getting a little bit of noise in the shadows at ISO 800.

14 Dec 2009 11:42am

@mo.langel: Merci.

Marie LC from Voiron, France

Le genre de photo que j'aime faire quand le temps le permet. Il faut parvenir à être là avant que la goutte ne tombe et parfois il m'arrive de capter ces gouttes quand le gel les a saisies et qu'elles sont alors figées

14 Dec 2009 11:56am

@Marie LC: Merci. Capturing drops that are about to drop involves a certain amount of sheer luck.

Judy from Brooksville, Florida, United States

That right hand droplet is stretching to its virtual limit ... just for you lens ... what a great shot!

14 Dec 2009 12:24pm

@Judy: The trick is to organize your luck!! Thanks for your kind words.

Barbara from Florida, United States

Superb image for the season. You always capture the true reds. In this I really like the details of the berries/crabapples with the texutre and moist skins.
Well composed. As for grain, in this type of image it adds to the image. Just like yesterday's.

14 Dec 2009 2:08pm

@Barbara: Thanks, Barb. They are berries about 1/2 in. in diameter.

You can take the film away from the boy, but not the grain from the photographer...or something like that. Getting caught up this morning. best...jerry

14 Dec 2009 4:10pm

@ordinaryimages: Yep. Sort of like the boy out of the South but not the South out of the boy!!

Jose Antonio from Barcelona, Spain

El brillo y la nitidez de la gota a 800 iso son impresionantes.

14 Dec 2009 6:05pm

@Jose Antonio: Gracias. The D700 is an incredible camera for low light situations; it has the same sensor as the D3. And the 24-70mm is far and away the best lens that I own. The Canon 500D screw-on close-up filter does nothing to degrade the image.

dabbler from Minneapolis, United States

Lovely reflection in the drops - excellent DOF!

14 Dec 2009 6:24pm

@dabbler: Thank you.

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

Another great capture of these droplets that you make look so huge. I do like the "stretching" look the drop evokes. Great texture and detail as well.

a beautiful capture!

16 Dec 2009 12:14pm

manel from Girona, Spain

Cordiales saludos.

16 Dec 2009 6:20pm

Isidro from Barcelona, Spain
