Re-Cropped Frisbee in the Fog

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 9 January 2010 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

Yesterday, I met with my photographer buddies for our weekly coffee gathering. Bill Laing had taken the "Frisbee in the Fog" shot and cropped it to a portrait orientation, plus adding some other editing. This does a much better job of focusing on the action. I did a slightly different crop and added some Structure in Viveza 2 to bring out the trees in the background. This is the results. Major point: input from other photographers is very valuable.

NIKON D700 1/640 second F/8.0 ISO 200 70 mm (35mm equiv.)

I concur with MontereyJohn. And you are right...that was good input and your image is even more outstanding than before !!

Paco Díaz from Palma de Mallorca, Spain

The image had quality enough to make this radical cropping. I like both, but I agree: this one is more powerful and the details and colors and trees in the background are more present and impact more.
I don't know this "Viveza", what is it?

9 Jan 2010 7:11am

@Paco Díaz: Take a look at this

Thank you for your wonderful explanation Jack! I agree with your reflection on shared experience with other photographers! A reflection of a "teacher"!. The image you uploaded today is wonderful! I imagine that you've exceeded the expectations of enhancing an image using another point of view! Give me envy! Kisses, Adela

The re-cropped version is much more effective. I like how reducing the number of players and moving right into the principal action has transformed the shot. Excellent re-make.

The cropping really makes this one a stand-out photo.

9 Jan 2010 10:26pm

I like this one too! This definitely isolates the action and with the fog the light is perfect!

9 Jan 2010 11:00pm

Viewfinder from Bradenton, FL, United States

Definitely more focused on the action. But with the mystery of the fog still a major factor in the overall comp. I like the crop/processing very much.
