Wonderful Moss

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 27 January 2010 in Plant & Nature.

I'm not certain why I am so attracted to moss. The moss around here seems to have a numinous quality. Today's shot and the one on the 25th were taken from the walkway in Bill Laing's post yesterday

MORE ON FELLOW PHOTOGRAPHERS - I appreciate being in the community of photographers almost as much as photography itself. That's why I limit my web sharing pretty much to Am3 and don't have a personal website. The community of Am3 is a great gift and blessing for me.

Hi Jack, I like the colors of the photo. The mos i can't see clearly. Maybe some closer?

@Richard Geven: Except for a few branches, it's all moss.

Because moss is like in a world of their own! Look at that, so alien-like :D

I'm glad you have a "thing" for moss. That is to our benefit.
You've caught the textures and colors well and this is a lovely treatment.

Thanks for your thoughts about AM3.
I have taken the same approach...this is where I spend my time and energy and focus.
And I am getting so much back !!!

Your air has to be clear and pure, when mosses are so healthy on branches. At least many of that kind mosses are working as an indicator of air.
Nice day to you John!

A lightweight fabric, a very bright color and delicate! An abstraction of lush vegetation! Imagine a dress with this lovely moss? I prefer it to the best silk! An excellent macro master Jack! Many kisses/besos muchos!

These strands of moss are interesting. Even though we have Spanish moss my first thought is moss like on the roof of the red barn you captured.
This image makes me more aware there are many other forms of moss.
This offered nice colors and textures.

I agree with your comment about AM3 and the community, and can appreciate that you expressed it.
It is a place I too spend much time to share my passion for photography and get so much more in return.

maybe one reason for your fascination is the mulitude of appearances =)
I have greatest respect for these kind of fellows ( moss - lichen - fern) they are sooo old and their life-concept still works perfectly - plus the beauty ;)

@Betsy Barron: We've had a very mild winter.

Great study of moss. Glad you are attracted to taking photos of it - do you think it is the texture that is so interesting.

27 Jan 2010 10:41pm

@kiwisa: I love the texture.

The moss is've caught it beautifully !!! Seems your feelings about am3 are shared by many others.....isn't that nice???

27 Jan 2010 11:14pm

@Susan: Yes, it is. It makes me sad when people leave Am3 to do their own thing.

Mirza Ahmad from Amsterdam, Netherlands

Looks spooky.

28 Jan 2010 12:07am

akarui from Kagoshima, Japan

This moss is very long like hairs. It must be very humid there, isn't it?

28 Jan 2010 12:27am

@akarui: Very!

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

Such colorful gossamer.

28 Jan 2010 12:38am

@Steve Rice: Gossamer is such a great word; it just feels good in your mouth.

Ajay from Pune, India

That gives some insight about you, Jack, and your photography. One question though... I don't see you are using Flickr anymore as much as you use AM3. Why so?

28 Jan 2010 1:23am

@Ajay: Two reasons. One, I don't really have the time to do both. And, two, I like Am3 better; it feels more like a community.

amy from Nanaimo, BC, Canada

I know what you mean about liking moss. I think it comes down to the colour... green in all it's variances. Plus moss pics make for great texture layers!!

28 Jan 2010 2:12am

Self-Indulgence from Chicagoland, United States

I'm glad you chose to stick with us Jack. It is more like a community here. This isn't that spanish moss is it? That stuff that is supposed to just.. take over. It really looks soft, downy here.

28 Jan 2010 2:22am

@Self-Indulgence: No, it's definitely not Spanish moss.

Probably the first close-up that I have seen of your moss captures, which illustrates nicely the texture seen here. I can feel its "wetness" against my arm. :-)
