Front Yard Beauty

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 21 February 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

The crocuses are blooming like crazy all over our neighborhood. So I bumped a few photos that I already had plugged in. These were in our front yard. This one was shot with my G11 as Beau and I were heading out on a walk. Consequently I didn't get the bokeh that my 105mm macro produces.

HDR (important!) - No matter what your opinion on HDR, you owe it to yourself to go to Trey Ratcliff's website http://www.stuckincustoms.com/ and watch his lecture to Google. It is absolutely superb. Even if you never, ever, use HDR, you will gain insights that are invaluable for your photography.

A beauty of a shot. You've caught such luminous color. It takes the breath away !
(Okay, you've piqued my curiosity. I hate HDR, but if I learn something that makes me
have more appreciation of it, and if I learn more about photography in general, then, I'm there.
I will check it out. Thanks, Jack.)

21 Feb 2010 7:34am

@Dulcie: The sections on how we see colors, on light, on composition, on left brain/right brain, on this being the decade of artistic expression will all interest you (I think).

Three crocusses an amazing blue color that only nature can invent! A photographer who was able to admire and collect them into an image that teaches us today and perhaps gives us to rejoice all the day? Thanks my dear Jack for so soft and elegant gift! Many kisses the color of your flowers! Adela

21 Feb 2010 8:07am

@Fonts: My goodness, Adela; it had always seemed to me that your kisses were "red" hot :))

It's a fine close up with wonderful detail and rich colors. A fine flower shot. None have bloomed here as yet, but the day seems close with the warm days. However, this morning it dropped to 21.6 as I write this. Generally, we've been having barely freezing temperatures at night followed go 40s during the day.

21 Feb 2010 2:42pm

@Don: We've had a string of 60º days.

Beautiful shot Jack.......and thanks for mentioning Trey's talk.....I've noticed on the blog a few times, but hadn't gotten around to watching it yet.....Now, I'll make a point to do so!!! So when did you get the HDR bug....if I remember correctly, you didn't used to be a fan....??!!??

21 Feb 2010 3:51pm

@Susan: I have long used HDR for ranges of light that exceed the capture capacity of my camera. I tend toward what I would call the "realistic" end of the spectrum; most of the time, you can't tell that I used HDR. On occasion, I use HDR to give a photograph a little punch. If I create the so-called "HDR look," I generally convert it to B&W. I love HDR monochromes. And, most important, I am a big advocate of people doing what "they" like. When I make comments, I try to do it within what I think are the photographer's goals. And it ticks me off when people get so upset when someone tries something different. I refuse to be put in a box. (Next month I am going to run a series of three photographs; the first one is straight, the second is a one photo HDR of the same shot; and the third is a painterly version.) PS - After writing this, I went and created a B&W conversion of the HDR.
