Dance Recital

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 13 August 2010 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

I had to interrupt the Echo Basin series for at least one photograph from Fiona's dance recital yesterday. I took almost 300 shots in 30 minutes. For this photograph, I used Nik's Glamor Glow and onOne's Edge Burn.

(PS - you can see the False Hellebore in yesterday's photograph in the Aug. 8 shot.)

ALWAYS, ALWAYS thoroughly check out your camera and lens before shooting. Yesterday, I flew out the door late for Fiona's dance class recital. I took my D300 and 70-300mm lens. All through the recital, I kept wondering why I had such slow shutter speeds. When it was all over, I realized that I had a polarizer on. Plus, I didn't turn on the VR. Inexcusable. Glad to know that none of you ever do that sort of thing.

What a prevcious little poppet. Bet you enjoyed taking all those photos. Lovely memory of her recital despite your little accident( and of course we all do the same):)))

Gorgeous, elegant little lady! Trouble about being a photographer is that with "300 shots in 30 minutes" You never saw her"Live", It's a pity we can't split our brains in 2, one for the camera, and one "Au naturel"

QB from Victoria, Canada

I have never tried to take indoor shots with a polarizer cemented to my lens (and no filter wrench... damn those tiffen c-pols -- they are sticky!). Nor have I ever shot 400 landscapes with the white balance set to tungsten. I've never grabbed my bag without looking inside and ended up shooting sunsets with a 90mm macro lens. I ALWAYS remember to turn VR off when I use a tripod. I never shoot with ridiculously high ISO's in bright sunlight. And I swear I have never taken a set of shots to be blended into HDRI and bracketed them in S mode. Nope.

She's adorable. The soft focus is actually very sweet here. You captured the smile... it's joyous!

13 Aug 2010 9:35am

@QB: I would have created soft focus in processing if it hadn't been in the capture. I would like to have been more in control :)))

A photo like "David Hamilton" A light vagueness to strengthen the movement... A lot of lightness and sweetness... I like very much...

You still came up with a fine dance shot. These slips just "happen" once in a while!

This is so precious - I have done all those things that QB was talking about
I remember at my oldest grandsons 8th grade graduation firing away in a blasted gym with awful lighting - trying every combination of exposures and settings that i could think of and about 2 of them came out 'sorta, kinda, well maybe, iffy". It doesn't matter what matters her is that sweet little girl on image - what a precious shot. I love this Jack

13 Aug 2010 2:35pm

Tracy from La Selva Beach, United States

Oh this is PRICELESS!
(and I cannot even count the number of times I have had the settings wrong, or left the polarizer on!)

SJLo from Tehran, Iran

She is happy but the color is sad

13 Aug 2010 3:05pm

@SJLo: Personally I love the color and tones. It's a mood, not a snapshot. The only thing that I changed for a print was slightly increasing the exposure slider.

tataray from france, France

Excellent le mouvement ...)
Et j'aime les tons pleins de chaleur.

Macrobaby from Vancouver, Canada

Sweet...and I agree that the color and tones are wonderful! Sometimes wonderful things happen when we are not paying attention to the details.

13 Aug 2010 3:50pm

@Macrobaby: Thank you. For me, photography, from capture to print, is a very creative act. I am not drawn toward photojournalism or product photography; although I have great respect for those who are.
