Foggy HDR #3

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 26 October 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

HDR Efex. I also have a more gritty rendition of this one. However, rather than that one, tomorrow I will post a photograph that comes close to how it actually looked.

THANK YOU for all of the kind comments on Sunday's photograph making the Spotlight. It was kind of nice that it was a Sunday. I must admit that I have mixed feelings about the Spotlight. I realize that on any given day there really are some better photographs being posted that don't make the Spotlight. What matters most is the honor of having people look at and appreciate our work.

NIKON D700 F/16.0 ISO 800 38 mm (35mm equiv.)

Very beautiful composition in light and warm tones! Love the fog and the blur of the sun!

Marie LC from Dauphiné, France

I like the HDR when it is discreet as on your image. A very beautiful atmosphere gets free of this mystic mist

DULCIE from Danville, CA, United States

I love this field of trees, not exactly an orchard. The effect you've captured of the sun and fog is a wonderful combination.

kiwisa from North Shore, New Zealand

I love all these shots and would not be able to choose the best of them. BTW Spotlight is well deserved for your work.

Nice job! Seems like everytime I have the sun in the frame I get huge blowouts. Did you use a filter of some sort?

26 Oct 2010 9:24am

@Formerly Known as MontereyJohn: John, I didn't use any filters for these foggy shots. However, I'll post an HDR photograph on Saturday where I used a split ND filter, but that was to deal with a blown out sky (there is no sun in it). One of the main reasons for doing HDR is to better handle problems like blown out suns and skies.

k@ from Paris, France

A delicious light through the haze, Jack.

rokhsana from tehran, Iran

I'm becoming more and more interested in HDR photography.excellent work!

26 Oct 2010 9:57am

@rokhsana: It was shooting waterfalls that pulled me into HDR. I simply couldn't do a good job with the huge dynamic range of light. My photograph on October 20 is a perfect example.

The rough growth and the bizarre sunlight gives this an other-worldly look to me. Unusual and get very appealing.

Denny Jump Photo from Easton, PA, United States

Hi Jack - Whew! I have been catching up on your images...I noticed while we were in Seattle that you made the spotlight - good show - you deserve it, you do a magnificent job on anything that you do! of all the HDR items I think I kinda like this one a bit over the others but not by much...not even sure why - but I like it...maybe it's the tone (?) As we get older it's just easier to think of things in "antique," know what I mean? Great job. Serioulsy, thank you for honoring and blessing all of us with your wonderful, wonderful images, beautiful imagination, and impeccable image care. Well done it was great to be back on God's Northwest Coast for sure, if only for a short time...

26 Oct 2010 8:13pm

Steve Rice from Olympia, United States

A lovely shot. The colors are super. Although I bought HDR Efex, I'm underwhelmed so far by its slowness and the 64/32 bit issue. For now I'm sticking with Photomatix.

26 Oct 2010 9:45pm

@Steve Rice: I haven't used HDR Efex in PS because I want to still use Nik's Dfine and Sharpener, both of which still require 32 bit. So I'm doing all of my HDR Efex out of LR3. I personally haven't found it to be all that slow. The abundance of presets makes me feel like a kid in a candy store.

LauraS from Chico, United States

Another lovely shot, Jack. Such an interesting effect the fog gives to the color you choose.

26 Oct 2010 9:54pm

@LauraS: Thank you. Fog is magical with HDR

Barbara from Florida, United States

Very effective processing. It compliments the scene.

Michael Rawluk from Williams Lake, BC, Canada

That is a glorious golden shot.

27 Oct 2010 4:09am

Ronnie 2¢ from Atlantic Shores, United Kingdom

Each of these take on a believable (if enhanced) reality and it starts to make me think what it is we would each actually see if we stood in a crowd as you took the shot ! Something tells me each would see it different !
