Fog in the Forest

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 21 January 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

"The Social Network" - our local newspaper editor saw this as a major theme of the movie, "The Social Network," "the more connected we get, the more isolated we seem to be." I think that this is well worth thinking about.
Analogously, for us photographers, are we so busy on Am3 that we are not out taking photographs and creating art with them?

A forest in three dimensions ... perfect and cozy despite the fog lights for their warm and comfortable. An ideal place to get lost in it! Best regards besos y abrazos para ti querido amigo! Recuerdos a la familia, Adela

I quite expect figures to emerge from that fog . . a certain realism about this.

An interesting debate. My take on it is that Social Media simply replaces something that we haven't done for 100 years or so-talk to acquaintances that may or may not become deeper friends. This was the way of the village back in the 19th Century, but we lost the art in the 20th. To me, at least, the AM3 village is one that I enjoy living in, and I fully expect to meet up with(In person) a few of the folk that I wouldn't have not met in other circumstances. So, rather than feeling isolated, I feel exactly the opposite.
So, onto the shot!. The mist makes the shot intriguing, you can see some, but not all....hmm, a good analogy for social networking indeed!

21 Jan 2011 9:38am

@CElliottUK: great that the social network serves you in the way that it does

Franz from Baden, Austria

interesting indeed! i'm not active in social networks, consciously so, because i like to meet my friends in person or talk to them on the phone at least. BUT - networks like am3 are a bit different, i think, because they have a clear purpose, and in that i think it is great. although, if i want to take it seriously, i do spend quite some time with it (sometimes too much, i think)!
as to your photo, jack, i think this is one of the best fog pictures ever! everything's spot on here - the tonality, the focus, the constrasts, the whole frame!

it is the same with social networking as with this photo.... it is worthy of exploring to find the treasures - but no, not isolating... that's my opinion!

I marvel at the golden tones of your fog shots ... not so here.
As for social networking, I agree w/CE ... and have met face-to-face about 25 individuals I'd never have met w/o the computer.
In addition, I've connected with 2nd cousins all over Canada I never knew about before my genealogy work and have met the ones in Quebec. These are not mere acquaintances, but real people with whom I keep in touch, so I'm all for it! ;D

@Judy aka L@dybug: glad the the social network has been so helpful for you

A beautiful shot in the woods. The overall golden cast makes the shot very attractive...and the foggy effect adds to that charm.

Excellent points....On all counts, Jack. I quite agree. The new age of "unconnected connections" allows for impersonal insults or kind compliments in the same way. The visual element is valuable when it is sincere...but also valuable in another way when it is insincere if the viewer can tell the difference. For us, as whatever "level" we are at, I think it is important that we try to retain, promote, and return the personal "touch" to our audience's heart and mind in whatever way that we can...A beautiful image that really relates to your text Jack! Thank You!

21 Jan 2011 6:01pm

Becky from los angeles, United States

beautifully shot - I love the tones - and peacefulness. Interesting text - something to think about. I agree that something very personal has changed in the way we communicate - with all the tweeting and facebook - etc - seems like too much stimuli - too external - and I also see that reaching out to others because of the networking is truly intriguing and builds and maintains relationships in fascinating way. I would hope that we could balance this part of technology in the future a little better. I think there will come a time ( not so far from now) that we are forced into retreating to a place that serves us more on a quiet survival level - manning our gardens - creating - etc.
- doing what we need to do - from the inside out. I think this will happen. I think we will be made to remember who we are without the social network in the future. Again it's in the balancing - but ultimately
knowing what we would do without this technology is the most important question I believe of our time.

Love it! Maybe a bit more of the trees and a bit less foreground would be nice, but this works too.

Beautiful capture with great colors. I sense the same feeling in your last sentence. I used to have photos pre-loaded for a few weeks at a time and lately it's like I have only been getting maybe 3 or 4 loaded at a time, leaving me somewhat too tied with the blog.

I like the mix of brown and green grasses in the foreground. And fog is always an excuse to shoot, but there's nothing to grab attention above the grass.

Beautiful Jack.. the fog is mysterious and yet breathtaking. And yes I think sometimes I spend far more time trying to visit people on Am3 rather than shooting. I feel bad if I don't visit my friends but likewise I am not improving much with lack of practice. I haven't found a balance yet.

I think it's fantastic we live in a time where people from around the globe can share their passion for the image, despite our differences in cultures and distances. Photography is the international language and social networking is the voice that expresses it.
