I'm learning to use slow shutter speeds for ocean photographs. sunstone_maria is my mentor (she does incredible work). Unfortunately I received her email tutorial after I had been to the Coast. This photograph is not nearly long enough.

Eric took the words right out of my mouth, Jack!
I totally agree with him. There is an old song entitled "You Stepped out of a Dream" that just rings through my mind here....(my favorite arrangement is one done by Cal Tjader, recorded at the Lighthouse in SFO many many years ago)...
And why is it that this view so deeply reminds me of the view looking down the coast from the south end of town in Port Orford...looking down towards Humbug Mountain State Park reminds me of that beloved place as well! Great piece here, Jack - just wonderful!

I still like the soft quality you achieved with your exposure. The shot has a nice atmosphere that fits the haze of the ocean very well.

@Curly: on this shot and tomorrow's shot, i used a singh-ray vari-n-duo filter that adjusts for 8 stops

A great dreamy and calm composition that you've created with the slow shutter speed. I love how the hills in the background are more like a silhouette, giving attention to those outcroppings in the water.

Lovely seem to be doing quite well with your shutter speed....i,ll be learning a few curves this summer for water flows...

6 Apr 2011 6:25pm

@StarCosmosBleu: it is very different for the ocean than it is for waterfalls and creeks where you want more definition
