Church HDR

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 30 August 2011 in Architecture and Portfolio.

You can see the stained glass window used for the previous two days photographs. My reason for shooting the wide angle HDR from the balcony was that all 17 of the workshop participants were taking in-the-church photographs, and I wanted something different. This is for Curly and Steven.

Love the effect you have created. Blurring the lines between photography, painting and illustration.

The HDR treatment has almost turned the roof from stone to canvas!

@CElliottUK: A great church historian said that all churches are either tents or caves.

Elena Kotrotsou from Drossia, Greece

Looks more like a painting that a photograph.

Very dynamic HDR ! Wow !

Curly from South Shields, United Kingdom

It's cool, but as Chris alludes to it has made the church look like a tent.

30 Aug 2011 10:19am

@Curly: As mentioned in my intro, I wanted something very different than what anyone else in the workshop could conceivably come up with. A great church historian said that all churches are either tents or caves.

Heinz from Hamm, Germany

Das sieht ganz gut aus.

I enjoy the gem-like quality of the color. I especially like the high vantage point showing the church design.

There is almost a storybook feel to the shot Jack! Well done! ;-)

If we accept the idea that the result is not the reality, the visual effect and your work is interesting and well done... but personally i'm not still convinced by "strong" HDR... just my feeling... :-)

30 Aug 2011 12:18pm

@Evelyne Dubos: I rarely do strong HDR, but it was just right here for what I wanted to accomplish.

Don from Spokane, United States

Your wide angle shot looks very good! Nice work.

While I'm not fond of strong HDR, I'm happy to see the overview of the church and especially the window that has provided you with extraordinary pictures !! :-)

Personally, I think you have completely succeeded in composing and conveying something of truly unique feel and look. I think a lot of people use a heavy handed approach to their HDR on scenes that are obviously bad candidates for that. I don't see that in your application here. I see that this is a church and there is only so much that one can do with a church: B&W, verticle, wide angle, etc etc...I think this image is of a beautiful and interesting i.e. unique approach that allows us to see things in a new light - sort of like a Church is suposed to do. I think this is fantastic, Jack. Not a big HDR guy myself, but this is great!

@Denny Jump Photo: Thank you for your exceedingly kind words. The interior of some churches is magnificent. This is not one of them.

What a Great Image and what a fine treatment...I agree with much of what is said here.i thought it was from your imagination rather then real and i like that...Church should be otherworldly not just everyday...I can hear some "hot Gospel"as i write this.People slain in the spirit of the place.
