Your title sounds like a novel title written in th 40'S. Could have been the title of a Steinbeck's novel, a story about farmers before WWII. A story about family fighting against the harshness of life.
But also a family with the sense of love and friendlyness. What could so inviting that an old friendly oak during summer... stand or lie under its branches when you're looking for shadows, hiding the sun heat ?
