On the Way to Silver Falls SP

Posted by
john4jack (Corvallis, Oregon, United States) on 22 May 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Our first afternoon and evening at SFSP, it rained off and on. I am finding that the key to landscape clouds is not over sharpening.

NIKON D700 1/800 second F/9.0 ISO 400 58 mm (35mm equiv.)

There's nothing like open fields to give one the sense of peace. This photo does it admirably for me.

I guess it depends on what you want the end result to look like Jack, I often use Nik Viveza 2 to add extra structure to my skies, then use high pass filter to sharpen, I mask that layer and paint the sharpening out of the sky. This looks fine to me, as we've seen skies that look just like this constantly for the past two months!

22 May 2012 9:44am

@Curly: Yep. My concern is what is over sharpening to my eye. I generally add some Structure somewhere along the line. In fact, with Nik software, I might add a Control Point to the clouds and add both Structure and Contrast. I just need to be careful not to overdo it.

Julie L. Brown from Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

This is a very nicely processed scene, Jack. I agree with Maria and Curly. In general I do not sharpen skies or clouds, but I do use NIK Viveza to add structure if the clouds need more detail.

As someone who does not process my images beyond using the HDR setting on my camera, I have no idea what those other comments were talking about. I like the contrast of the clouds with the green landscape. It is a lovely image.
