Winter is a somber time of the year with muted tones. For me, it is a metaphor for a season of reflection and going deeper.

I can almost see a battle between something man-like and something winged. The humanoid has his arm raised in victory and the winged creature seems unable to rise. The again, it also looks like some crappy old wood in the forest.

Still strong after death. Beautiful subject, very beautiful treatment (or was it a fog), and very appropriate framing/cropping.
Actually, square framing, as the 8X10 format, to me are very intimate and calm down any subject. They offer serenity and are part of the photographer's language as any other technique.
